Michael Wall, Photographer

Since my childhood in the outer suburbs north of London, design has been an essential part of how I understand the world. My father was an engraver and I believe I inherited his graphic sensibility. My interest in art and design directed my journey through secondary education and onto graduation from the Central School of Art and Design in London. Photography was an interest from an early age, and has been a freely creative refuge from the highly disciplined work of the industrial designer I became.

I emigrated to Canada in 1979 and set up a B&W dark room shortly after. Although photography has been a continuous thread through the years, my discovery of digital photography in 2005 has released a new enthusiasm for the extended creative freedom it offers. I expect you will notice in my work an emphasis on compositional rather than documentary imagery – my designer instincts prevailing. I am also a jazz musician and much of what excites me visually can be described as rhythmic, melodic and improvisational. I live and work on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia. Many of the images shown in this portfolio originated in this area, which is called the Salish Sea.

I exhibit frequently in BC. My work is in collections in Canada, the USA and the UK.
