The Condition of Music
“All art constantly aspires towards the condition of music… [which is pure form]”. Paraphrased from Walter Pater, 1839-1894
In my life as a designer, artist and musician, I have sometimes used this statement as a creative prompt.
It is not a modern concept – currently there seems to be an imperative that each song have lyrics and every artwork discernible meaning and relevance.
In this series I have attempted to create images which are as close to pure form as music. In setting up each scene for the photograph I deliberately introduced an element of chance – the musical equivalent of improvisation.
